FAQs
Frequently asked questions about Section 508 and accessibility compliance.
What is Section 508?
Section 508 is an amendment to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requiring federal agencies — and organizations receiving federal funding — to ensure their electronic and information technology is accessible to individuals with disabilities. It covers websites, documents, software, video content, and other digital information.
What is WCAG, and how does it relate to Section 508?
WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is the technical standard for web accessibility published by the W3C. The Section 508 Refresh (effective January 2018) incorporated WCAG 2.0 Level AA as its technical baseline. WCAG 2.1 AA is the current best practice and is referenced in recent DOJ enforcement guidance and the 2024 ADA Title II rule.
Does Section 508 apply to my organization?
Section 508 applies to federal agencies and to contractors, grantees, and other organizations that develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology with federal funds. State and local governments are subject to ADA Title II. Higher education institutions are covered under Section 504 and the ADA. Healthcare organizations face obligations under the ADA and Section 1557. Private businesses are subject to ADA Title III. 508 Guidehouse can help you determine which standards apply to your organization.
What is the difference between an audit and remediation?
An audit identifies and documents accessibility barriers, producing a findings report with remediation guidance. Remediation addresses and resolves those barriers in the actual content or code. We offer both services, and clients may engage us for audit only, remediation only, or both as a combined engagement.
How long does document remediation take?
Turnaround depends on document length and complexity. A standard single document is typically returned within 2 business days. Complex documents with extensive tables, charts, and form fields require additional time. Rush delivery is available — include your deadline in your quote request and we will advise on availability.
What captioning formats do you deliver in?
We deliver in SRT, VTT, SCC, DFXP, and other standard formats. Specify your platform or delivery system in your quote request and we will confirm format compatibility.
Can you support our organization in developing an accessibility compliance program?
Yes. Beyond project-based remediation and auditing, 508 Guidehouse can assist organizations in developing accessibility policies, procurement language, testing workflows, and staff guidance. Contact us to discuss your program objectives.
